Ukraine - History in the Making
Ukraine - History in the Making is a series of conversations with me and various guests aiming to improve our understanding of the war in Ukraine and with the ambition of improving our ability to understand and fight the global struggle for freedom. My name is Emil Juhler-Nøttrup, I am 27 years old and I come from Copenhagen, Denmark. I have always been politically active and currently I’m doing a Master’s degree in Political Science. Besides that I went to Ukraine in February 2024. My personal motivation for doing this stems from a sense of responsibility and indignation that I have felt ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The responsibility and indignation arose because what took place crystallised for me what happens when free democratic countries meet autocratic threats with apathy, conveniency and appeasement. The free democratic world failed Ukraine by giving them NOTHING substantial to defend themselves with prior to the full-scale invasion because we thought the President and the people would surrender without a fight. Why were we so blatantly wrong? I think it comes down to two factors. One is our own inability to defend and understand freedom, and the other is our lack of knowledge about the countries that have suffered under Soviet and Russian influence in the past, and I think the two are intrinsically linked. Therefore, I also think that by understanding Ukraine better, we can improve our overall ability to defend and understand freedom. The conversations take place in Danish and English, as I also speak with Danes. I do my best to talk to as many Ukrainians as possible, because their stories are the most important and greatly inspire me, but many of the conversations are also with Danish and foreign politicians or experts whose voices are important in the debate. Enjoy and get smarter. Slava Ukraini!

As time stand still before the offensive everyone talks about, I found it right to do my own prediction. My prediction differs from what you would normally hear in many ways. How? My focus is mainly on Western responsibility. Why? Because Western will to support Ukraine is the most changeable factor influencing the outcome of the war as of now.
Slava Ukraini!

On the 14th of April I spoke with Dr. Marina Miron, who is a German military analytic from Kings College in London right now working with the defense study department. Her focus is on military strategy more broadly on a grand strategic level. We speak about aspects of the war such as modern informational warfare, history, Ukrainian defense will, development of Russians politics, western responsibility when confronting Russian threats to democracies and much more!

On the 8th of April I spoke with Daria Boiko, who fled from her home city in Kherson Oblast to Denmark in the beginning of the large-scale invasion. During this period her parents and other family members stayed in her hometown, where they now live under temporary Russian occupation. In the conversation Daria tells that story and we talk about why being politcally active for the Ukrainian cause is so important. One other main subject is the failure of the west to help Ukraine sufficiently. Besides that we talk about a lot of stuff, all with the aim of inspiring political action FOR Ukraine.

I had this conversation with Veronika from Kyiv in the end of April 2022, when i was was writing my bachelor last spring.
We talk about why the Ukrainian resolve and resistance is so strong, how the Maidan revolution of 2013/14 eventually led to Putin initiating a large scale invasion of Ukraine.
Given the fast developments of the war our conversation is a bid "outdated", but the topics and our considerations definetly remains relevant today.
It is the first in a series of conversations im planning to publish, and this one was recorded with no equipment whatsoever. The rest of the conversations I'm going to publish will be recent and recorded with equipment, so this is also a kind of test.
Give it a listen and enjoy to increase your knowledge about Eastern European countries, that belongs to the broader democratic European family.
